Nitrous Oxide Sedation

If your child experiences mild dental anxiety, we can reduce their fear with the help of nitrous oxide sedation. Safe and highly effective for children of all ages, it is administered by placing a nasal mask over their nose and instructing them to inhale the nitrous oxide and oxygen mixture. In no time, they will begin to feel completely relaxed while remaining aware of their surroundings. They will be able to respond to our cues without feeling any discomfort or fear. Once the gas is turned off and the mask is removed, they will solely breathe in oxygen until the effects wear off, allowing them to resume normal activity following their appointment.

Oral Moderate Sedation

Children who require multiple treatments during one appointment might benefit from oral moderate sedation. Taken in liquid or pill form, we will prescribe your child a medication that they will take before their appointment. By the time they reach the dentist’s chair, they will feel at ease and comfortable. A warm feeling may occur, and they may feel as if they’re falling asleep; however, they, too, will remain cognizant and capable of responding to our dental team. They may be unable to remember much from their appointment, but that is okay, especially for those who struggle with moderate dental anxiety. After treatment, it will take time for the effects to wear off, so make sure they return home to rest.

IV Sedation

IV sedation is commonly used for patients who experience severe dental anxiety or require complex dental care. Administered via an IV in the hand or bend of the elbow, your child will experience a calming sensation that allows them to relax without completely falling asleep. Our team will be able to safely provide dental care while monitoring their vitals to ensure that they remain safe and comfortable throughout their appointment. Once the IV is removed, you can escort your child home and let them rest. It is unlikely that they will experience any complications, but it is recommended that you monitor them just to be on the safe side.

General Anesthesiology

Children with special needs, those with pre-existing conditions, young ones who require a lot of treatment, or those who have extreme dental anxiety can benefit from general anesthesiology. Also known as hospital sedation, Dr. Segall and Dr. Blackwelder have hospital privileges at Hillcrest Hospital and Fish Pond Surgery Center, and they will carefully monitor your child throughout their treatment to ensure they remain safe while receiving essential dental care to improve their smile.
